LLU is the center of Zemgale planning region, its education and research activities contribute to the development of all its economic sectors thus promoting knowledge-based economic development. LLU has three activity programmes: 1. Studies, 2. Science, 3. Administrative and financial support for studies and research. The international cooperation is based on bilateral cooperation agreements with more than 25 European higher education institutions. The Department of Languages provides for content-based courses of Professional Foreign Language studies, which are mostly implemented in English and German. The approach applied by the academic staff of the department emphasizes that the improvement of foreign language and academic skills at the university level should be based on the following variety of pillars: an updated analysis of the needs of students, recent graduates and employers; internationalization of the study process through attracting visiting lecturers and exchange students, and organizing international students’ conferences and cultural events during extra-curriculum activities; a wide application of modern Information Technologies (IT), as well as blended learning. It is also based on tailor-made tasks and the following web-enhanced language learning activities: web-search activities, web-quest activities; video lectures, use of e-dictionaries, interactive free ready-made sources for practice outside classrooms, podcasts, online reading materials. The acquisition of content-based study courses with the help of the centrally-managed e-learning environment Moodle would be helpful since the Internet environment has become increasingly used therefore two aspects are important: firstly, e-learning as a habit in the study process and, secondly, the mastering of IT skills among the academic staff. Faculty of Information Technologies is one of the newest and most modern faculties which trains specialists for practical and scientific work in the field of information technologies. Besides, the academic staff of the faculty supervises and administrates the design of e-leaning courses. The Department of Languages in cooperation with the Faculty of Information Technologies can work on the application of interdisciplinary approach to developing IT competences, including designing e-learning courses.
